How I became a doctor, where I have worked over the past two decades, and why I write about skin conditions in such detail.

Introduction

It would no doubt look much better for me to introduce myself as someone who, even as a young child, played doctor with her baby dolls and set out to become a doctor when she grew up. This, however, was not the case with me. I only decided relatively late in life — and persuaded somewhat by my parents — after graduating from high school, that I would like to pursue a career in medicine.

After having practised medicine for nearly two decades now, I can honestly say that I feel truly thankful for having chosen this line of profession.

Already while attending medical school, I was amazed at how wonderfully the human body is “put together” and — thanks to the incredible advances in medicine — how much can be mended if for whatever reason it “breaks”. Later on, already as a dermatologist, I realised how many of us suffer from various ailments of the skin. Old friends and acquaintances came to me with their skin problems, and impromptu examinations and treatment advice became an almost daily occurrence, even in public places.

It is always a wonderful feeling to be able to help someone who has been suffering from a long-standing skin disease, and it gives me enormous pleasure when a small aesthetic procedure helps a person feel better in his or her own skin. It feels just as good when someone takes me into their confidence and comes back to me with whatever is troubling them.

Why do I write about these conditions in such detail?

When I started putting this website together, well-meaning relatives and friends gave me the usual advice: “don't write in such detail, in today's rushed world people have no time to read such long pieces”, and “if you write everything down, nobody will come to see you in person”.

I see it differently:

  • If someone suffers from a condition that makes their everyday life miserable, they are understandably willing to spend hours online looking for useful information.
  • Most people, however, gather that information from sources no professional has ever checked, which then confuses them even more.
  • If we understand how our condition develops and how the treatments work, we follow the often lengthy therapies with far more dedication and patience.
  • Meeting the doctor in person is still necessary, because even within one group of conditions the severity and character of cases differ — and it takes a specialist to help choose the treatment that fits the individual.
